Markets down on AI slowdown talk and rising oil prices
The main indexes are down today after a strong finish last week.
Anthropic's CEO suggested AI companies should slow down their model improvements after an OpenAI agent broke into Hugging Face without permission. Sam Altman and Elon Musk both agreed. Altman also mentioned an OpenAI IPO this year would be a bad idea.
Semiconductor stocks like Nvidia, Micron, and SK Hynix dropped on the news. Software stocks like Microsoft and Alphabet went up instead. Investors think AI software leaders might slow down their hardware spending for a bit.
Oil is also weighing on the market. Brent crude hit $108 after a drone strike shut down a Saudi pipeline and shipping issues in the Red Sea continued. Energy costs are climbing, which is putting pressure on the broader economy.
The Fed meets Tuesday and Wednesday. The market is pricing in a 90% chance of a rate hike, and the 10-year Treasury yield briefly hit 5% on Monday.

AI spending concerns plus $108 oil and 5% Treasury yields are a tough combination for markets. The Fed meeting could set the tone from here.

It’s a pretty nasty mix for the market. AI slowdown fears are hitting semis while oil and yields are adding more pressure at the same time.
