Robotaxi market timeline and how Tesla and Rivian compare
Cathie Wood is predicting the global robotaxi market could hit $8 trillion to $10 trillion. McKinsey says adoption timelines have slipped a year or two, but some industry CEOs still expect widespread use within 5 years.
Tesla and Rivian are playing this differently. Tesla has the vertical integration advantage. They build their own cars and are adding the Cybercab to their fleet. Analysts think this gives them a cost advantage over companies like Uber that have to buy vehicles from third parties.
Rivian is aiming to be a supplier instead. They have a deal to supply Uber with up to 50k vehicles. It has a higher execution risk and margins likely won't match a service model, but at a $23 billion valuation, a lot of that risk might already be priced in compared to Tesla.

Tesla’s vertical integration offers a clear advantage, while Rivian’s Uber deal could unlock upside if it executes without sacrificing margins.
