Ultragenyx (RARE) gets FDA approval for its first gene therapy
Ultragenyx got FDA accelerated approval for GENGLYCOS. It is a gene therapy for GSDIa, a rare metabolic disorder where patients cannot properly regulate their blood sugar. Before this, patients had to constantly consume raw cornstarch around the clock to avoid severe drops in glucose.
This is the company's first gene therapy approval and fifth FDA approval overall. The treatment helps the body break down glycogen normally, reducing the need for the strict cornstarch diet. As part of the accelerated approval, Ultragenyx has to provide two years of follow-up clinical data. The FDA also awarded them a priority review voucher.
