NASA just hired Rocket Lab (RKLB) and a startup called Eta Space to test in-space cryogenic fuel transfer. Rocket Lab is providing the Electron rocket and satellite bus to launch the payload, with a tentative date set for July 17. SpaceX is also working on this technology for their Starship and the Artemis moon missions, aiming for a demo in June 2026. Figuring out how to refuel in orbit is a requirement for deep space missions, so now it is a bit of a race between Rocket Lab and SpaceX to get it working first.
