U.S. auto industry pushing Trump to block Chinese EVs

The U.S. auto industry and lawmakers from both parties are lobbying Trump to keep Chinese automakers out of the U.S. market ahead of his meeting with Xi Jinping. Trump mentioned in January that he would welcome Chinese companies building auto plants in the U.S., which worried domestic producers. There are currently bipartisan bills moving through Congress to codify existing bans on Chinese connected vehicles and block industry partnerships. Auto groups and steelmakers argue that Chinese EVs benefit from heavy state subsidies and would undercut U.S. pricing. Chinese brands are already gaining significant market share in Europe and Mexico. For comparison, a Geely EV sells for about $22,700 in Mexico, while the cheapest Tesla Model 3 in the U.S. is $38,630. Even Toyota has stated they are having a hard time competing with Chinese pricing in the Mexican market.

do you think blocking these companies will actually help local brands like Ford in the long run? it feels like a tough spot for everyone involved.
