AI power demand is driving a push into nuclear energy

AI data centers require a massive amount of electricity, and renewables just aren't scaling fast enough to keep up. The industry is increasingly leaning toward nuclear power as the primary solution to meet long-term demand. Constellation Energy (CEG) is already restarting a Three Mile Island reactor to power a Microsoft data center. They operate 21 reactors and generate more nuclear power than the rest of the US combined. Centrus Energy (LEU) supplies the enriched uranium and equipment needed to run these facilities. They have been consistently profitable since 2020, and the World Nuclear Association expects demand for their fuel to double by 2040. GE Vernova (GEV) is mainly focused on natural gas turbines, but they maintain a nuclear partnership with Hitachi. Their gas turbines are acting as a stopgap because they can be deployed much faster than building new nuclear plants. This immediate demand has pushed their project backlog to $150 billion.

nuclear just makes so much sense for the scale of ai. glad to see companies like constellation energy leading the way on this.
