Big Tech AI spending is driving demand for utilities like NextEra Energy
Tech giants like Alphabet and Meta are ramping up CapEx for AI data centers, which is creating massive power demand. NextEra Energy (NEE) seems to be a primary beneficiary. They had their best year ever for project origination last year with 13.5 GW added and now have a 30 GW backlog.
Specifics include signing 2.5 GW in deals with Meta and partnering with Google to develop campuses, which involves potentially restarting a nuclear plant in Iowa. They are also working with Exxon on a gas-fired plant with carbon capture. Management is targeting 15-30 GW of new generation for data center hubs by 2035.
