Madrigal licenses Pfizer's MASH drug to expand pipeline

Madrigal announced they are licensing ervogastat from Pfizer to pair with their existing treatment, Rezdiffra. It is an oral DGAT-2 inhibitor. The idea is that combining the two drugs could improve outcomes since they target liver fat through different pathways. Pfizer gets a $50 million upfront payment plus potential milestones and royalties. Phase 2 data for the new drug showed 72% of patients saw at least a 30% reduction in liver fat. They plan to consult with the FDA about a combination trial design later this year. Management will present more details at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference on Monday.

Smart pipeline move. Combo therapy makes a lot of sense here, and licensing instead of building from scratch keeps risk in check. If the FDA’s on board, this could turn Rezdiffra from a single asset into a real franchise.
