Robotaxi strategies for Tesla, Uber, and Rivian
Robotaxi strategies for Tesla, Uber, and Rivian
Here is a look at how Tesla, Uber, and Rivian are approaching the robotaxi market.
Tesla is trying to own the whole stack by building the cars, software, and network. It is a high risk bet since they eat all the costs if their timelines slip.
Rivian is acting more like a supplier. Uber agreed to invest up to $1.25 billion in them for up to 50k autonomous vehicles by 2031, but it is tied to hitting autonomy milestones.
Uber seems like the most practical play here. They are already partnering with Waymo, Rivian, and others. They do not have to build the cars or the self-driving tech. They just route the demand through their app. Regardless of who wins the hardware race, Uber still takes its cut and eventually removes its biggest expense, the human drivers.

Uber’s partnership approach seems flexible, but profitability will depend on adoption, operating costs, and how quickly robotaxis can scale.
