BioNTech gets mixed trial results for their cancer vaccines
BioNTech's stock dropped about 10% after they ended a Phase 2 trial for an mRNA colorectal cancer vaccine. An independent committee looked at the data and concluded the treatment likely wouldn't be effective.
They followed this up with some positive Phase 3 lung cancer trial data for Gotistobart. Median survival was 18.5 months versus 10 months for standard chemo. The market reaction was muted though, mostly because it was an early non-pivotal stage with only 87 patients. The main stage 2 portion is still ongoing.
Their Covid vaccine business is still slowing down, but they have other mRNA cancer treatments in the pipeline, like BNT113 for head and neck cancer which currently has FDA fast track status.

Mixed results highlight the risk in BioNTech’s oncology pipeline. The Gotistobart data is encouraging, but larger pivotal trials will need to confirm the benefit.

Clinical trials are always such a rollercoaster for BioNTech. I am keeping a close eye on their pipeline to see if the later stages prove more consistent.
