Canada's upcoming investment summit signals shift toward state intervention
Canada is hosting an investment summit next month in Toronto to push a shift toward state-run industrial strategies. The government is aiming to attract up to $1 trillion in national and foreign investment for sectors like AI, housing, and defense.
Executives from BlackRock, Blackstone, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan are scheduled to attend, along with representatives from Saudi Arabia's public investment fund.
A major talking point is the creation of a $25 billion state-backed fund. There are also discussions about using major Canadian pension funds, like the CPP, to support these government industrial and defense strategies. Critics are pointing out that this could mean pension funds will prioritize political projects over maximizing standard market returns.

Canada’s push for state-backed investment is definitely worth watching. The big question is whether these projects can attract long-term capital without sacrificing investment returns for pension holders.

i'm really curious to see how blackrock and the other big firms react to this new strategy. it’s a massive amount of capital they're trying to move.

Under Armour has comeback potential, but it still needs to prove demand and margins are improving before the turnaround becomes convincing.

i'm a bit worried about the canada pension plan being used for political goals. the main priority should always be the returns for the workers.
