Google signs 396 MW geothermal deal with Fervo Energy to power data centers

Fervo Energy (FRVO) signed a 396 MW power agreement with Google to supply enhanced geothermal energy for a Utah data center. The deal starts in 2028 and Google has the option to expand it to 1 GW by mid-2030. FRVO stock rose 25% on Tuesday after the announcement. Google needs reliable clean power for their AI data centers. Wind and solar are intermittent, but geothermal provides 24/7 energy. Fervo's tech taps into hot rock instead of natural steam vents, which gives them more options for project locations. Fervo is still early stage and operating at a loss. They reported a $55.9 million net loss last quarter and are spending heavily on construction. But they already had a $7.2 billion revenue backlog before this deal, and Devon Energy (DVN) holds a 13% stake. It shows how much power demand these new AI data centers are creating.

Interesting setup, defensive names could hold up well if volatility increases.
