Tesla is ending its Solar Roof product

Tesla stopped taking orders for its Solar Roof on Aug 20 and told installers they will no longer supply the product. The website page now redirects to conventional solar panels. Reports indicate Tesla internally concluded the tiles weren't financially viable. The economics didn't work out, with some installation quotes reaching $200k. This shouldn't impact their energy segment much. Solar deployments have been shrinking, and Tesla stopped breaking out solar numbers in their quarterly reporting a while ago. The energy division is still growing, but the revenue is driven almost entirely by utility-scale Megapack storage now.

Tesla dropping Solar Roof makes sense if the economics weren’t working. Megapack remains the key growth driver for its energy business.

Yeah, I think that’s a fair take. Tesla’s energy business looks much more compelling around Megapack right now, especially if utility scale storage keeps growing faster than residential solar.
