Overview of recent EV sector numbers and 2025 delivery updates

Motley Fool recently published an overview of the EV sector based on 2025 numbers. Here are the main takeaways. Tesla delivered 1.63 million vehicles in 2025, maintaining its lead, though its $1.4 trillion valuation keeps the stock on the riskier side due to high P/E ratios. Rivian saw a slight dip in deliveries to about 42k because they paused lines for the upcoming R2 model. However, they reported a $144 million gross profit, a big turnaround from their $1.2 billion loss the year before. Legacy automakers are making steady progress. Ford is leaning heavily into hybrids, with sales up 22% and the F-150 and Maverick leading the pack. GM is scaling slower than initially planned but remains focused on profitability and currently offers a near 1% dividend. On the international and startup front, NIO deliveries jumped 47% and they are prepping new SUV models for 2026. Li Auto showed solid fundamentals with a $163 million net income and an $8.1 billion cash reserve. VinFast doubled its global deliveries to 196k and is improving its margins. Lucid remains a high-risk play, still unprofitable, but they are planning a sub-$50k Cosmos model and a robotaxi partnership with Uber for 2026.

honestly ford going heavy on hybrids seems like a really smart move right now. not everyone is ready for full electric yet so it bridges the gap nicely for regular drivers.

definitely a realistic approach by Ford. not everyone can charge at home yet so hybrids are a great compromise.
