Nasdaq drops into correction territory as oil tops $110
The Nasdaq hit correction territory today, dropping over 10% from its peak. The Dow also dropped about 800 points. Rising oil prices are the main factor, with Brent crude over $110 due to ongoing disruptions in the Middle East.
Money is moving into defensive stocks because of the volatility. Altria was up nearly 3% today as investors look for dividend yields.
Tech companies are dealing with the costs of AI. Sony is raising PS5 prices by up to $150 because AI data centers are driving up memory costs. Amazon plans to spend $200 billion on AI infrastructure this year while cutting jobs. Microsoft is down 25% for the quarter as investors worry about their heavy AI spending.
Netflix is raising subscription prices across all tiers to fund a $20 billion content budget. Cybersecurity stocks like CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks dropped about 5% because Anthropic is testing a new AI model that could make hacking easier.

netflix raising prices again is a bit tough to swallow as a subscriber. i really hope the new content they're planning is actually worth the extra monthly cost.
