Tesla's EV sales drop as BYD takes the global lead

BYD officially passed Tesla in global EV sales. In 2025, BYD delivered 2.26 million units, up 28%, while Tesla dropped 8% to 1.64 million. BYD is expanding its lineup with 11 new models, a luxury sedan with 640 miles of range, and 5-minute fast charging tech. On the flip side, Tesla is ending Model S and X production to use the factory space for Optimus robots. They are clearly shifting focus toward AI and autonomous tech rather than their traditional car lineup. Models 3 and Y still make up 97% of Tesla's sales, but the lineup is aging. If you're holding TSLA strictly as a traditional car company, the investment thesis might need an update.

Everyone’s focused on BYD’s volume, but Tesla stepping away from legacy EV models might be the bigger story here.

byd seems to be moving so fast with their new models lately. tesla still has the brand name, but the competition is getting really intense now.
