A look at Rivian vs Lucid as alternative EV plays
A look at Rivian vs Lucid as alternative EV plays
Lucid and Rivian are taking different approaches to compete with Tesla right now. Lucid wants to transition into being mostly a tech supplier, but they are struggling to scale. Their cheapest car is $70k, leading to less than 17k deliveries last year. Without a cheaper mass-market vehicle, they lack the real-world driving data needed to train their AI models.
Rivian looks to be in a better position. Their sub-$50k R2 SUV is expected to start deliveries next month. Getting a cheaper model on the road will give them the driving data they need. They are also planning to make their own AI chips and have R3 models lined up for 2027 and 2028. With a $20 billion market cap, Rivian seems like a much clearer path compared to Lucid.

Rivian feels like it has the clearer path right now, cheaper models, more data, and better scale potential. Lucid still looks stuck in that premium niche.

rivian seems to have a lot of momentum with the r2 and r3 lineup coming up. it's going to be a tough road for lucid if they can't get those delivery numbers up soon.
