UPS closing 22 union facilities and cutting Amazon volume to improve margins
UPS is closing 22 package sortation centers with union employees in 18 states this year, including locations in Dallas, Miami, and Atlanta. This is part of their strategy to consolidate the network and improve profitability by matching capacity to lower volumes. They are also planning to drop 50% of their business with Amazon by June because those deliveries aren't profitable.
Management mentioned on an earnings call that they expect to eliminate 30,000 jobs and close 24 facilities total in the first half of the year. They are offering $150,000 buyouts to drivers to reduce headcount, but the Teamsters union is suing to block the voluntary separation program.
