Uber CEO says self-driving cars need 10-20 years to scale significantly
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi spoke at Davos and tempered expectations on autonomous vehicles. He said affordability is the main issue with current costs over $100k per unit. He expects deployment to be limited for the next 3-5 years and thinks it will take 10-20 years for AVs to become a significant part of their ride-hailing business.
He did note that within a decade robot drivers will likely be safer than humans, but warned that job displacement for drivers will happen gradually as automation expands.
