Google DeepMind CEO discusses innovator's dilemma and disrupting search
DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis did an interview discussing Google's position in the AI race. He believes we are heading toward a golden era of scientific discovery in the next 10-15 years, particularly in medicine and energy.
He admitted Google faces a classic innovator's dilemma where they have to risk disrupting their core search business to compete with generative AI. He said if they don't disrupt themselves, someone else will. This was the main driver behind merging Google Brain and DeepMind to pool compute resources for training models like Gemini.
He also touched on Isomorphic Labs, which is using AlphaFold to move drug discovery to computer simulations. They expect to hit clinical trials by the end of the year.
