Summary of current EV battery stocks and market challenges
Summary of current EV battery stocks and market challenges
Automakers are facing profitability issues with the shift to electric vehicles. Ford and GM have cut back on production recently because they can't lower prices enough to drive demand. Ford even pushed back the F-150 Lightning production to 2027 to wait for cheaper battery technology.
The article highlights a few key players in the battery space:
Tesla is retooling a factory in 2025 to fix production issues with its 4680 batteries. They need this to work for the Cybertruck and robotaxi plans since their auto sales have been falling.
BYD is consistently selling more than double its closest competitor. Since they make their own chips and batteries, their margins are better than most.
Toyota is trying to catch up by developing in-house battery manufacturing.
Albemarle had to cut spending recently due to low lithium prices in 2024 but has assets to ramp back up when prices recover.
Solid Power won a $50 million award from the Department of Energy for solid-state batteries. They are backed by Ford and BMW but revenue is currently low.

EV batteries are clearly the bottleneck right now. Demand isn’t dead, but margins are getting squeezed hard until cheaper tech shows up. The winners look like the ones that control their own supply chain (BYD) or can survive the down cycle and scale when costs finally come down. Everyone else is basically in wait-and-prove mode.
