Musk and Bezos are competing to build AI data centers in space
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are reportedly moving their rivalry to orbital AI data centers. The idea is to move the heavy power consumption of AI models off-planet to take advantage of solar energy in space. Blue Origin has had a team working on this for over a year, while SpaceX plans to integrate AI computing into updated Starlink satellites.
There are still major technical hurdles like getting rid of heat in a vacuum, but the news moved the market. Rocket Lab (RKLB) jumped over 8% on the potential demand for launches. AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) rose 5%, likely on speculation about infrastructure builds, while Redwire (RDW) dropped about 1%.
