Costco is pulling back on self-checkout at most stores. Management found that scanning bulk items is a hassle for customers and leads to errors. They are following a trend seen at Walmart and Target to limit self-checkout use. CEO Ron Vachris said they are shifting focus to Scan & Go, where you scan items with your phone and show a code at the exit. They are also testing a system where employees use handhelds to scan your cart while you wait in line, so only payment is needed at the register.
