Grid infrastructure is the new bottleneck for renewables and AI
Global energy infrastructure is struggling to keep up with renewables and AI data centers. The UK offers a clear example where investment in generation has outpaced grid updates. They have excess wind power in Scotland but can't transmit it south to demand centers.
They paid generators $2.3 billion last year to stop producing electricity because the grid couldn't handle the volume. National Grid is planning a $40 billion upgrade over five years, but wildlife concerns and local opposition are slowing the rollout. Connection times for new projects are currently 5 to 10 years.
