Eli Lilly (LLY) and Novo Nordisk (NVO) are still dominating the weight-loss drug market, especially with their new oral pill options. Pills are gaining traction because they are easier for patients to manage compared to injections. Viking Therapeutics (VKTX) is trying to compete with its own oral drug, VK2735. Their phase 2 data showed a 12.2% weight loss in just 13 weeks at the highest dose. For comparison, Eli Lilly's pill took 72 weeks to hit 12.4%. The catch is the side effects. Viking reported that 38% of patients on the highest dose dropped out early due to gastrointestinal issues. They will need to figure out dosing in phase 3 to fix the tolerability problems. It is a risky biotech play with no revenue right now, but it could see upside if their next data readouts improve on safety.
