Market update: Oil over $100, AI agents hit software stocks, and AWS disruptions
Market update: Oil over $100, AI agents hit software stocks, and AWS disruptions
The market cooled off today after yesterday's rally. Oil is back above $100 a barrel as US-Iran tensions continue, with planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure delayed for five days to allow for talks.
AI developments are starting to impact software stocks. ServiceNow dropped 4% and a software ETF fell 4.4% after Anthropic launched new AI agents that can operate apps and complete tasks. Amazon is also building AWS agents to automate tech jobs.
Amazon's AWS data centers in Bahrain were disrupted by drone activity for the second time this month. They are telling customers to migrate workloads out of the Middle East. Microsoft also noted that local towns pushing back against data center pollution and water usage is becoming a real risk to AI expansion.
In other news, Celsius dropped 9% after Costco launched a Kirkland energy drink. Gap is partnering with Google so people can buy clothes directly in the Gemini chat. Apple is adding paid ads to Apple Maps, and Shift4 went up 20% on heavy buying with no specific news catalyst.

Feels like macro + AI disruption hitting at the same time, oil pressure on one side, AI shaking software on the other.

it’s interesting to see microsoft mentioning local pushback on data centers. it makes sense that communities are worried about water and pollution with all this ai growth.
