SCOTUS to hear arguments on Cuba seized property cases involving Exxon and cruise lines
The Supreme Court is hearing arguments on Monday regarding the Helms-Burton Act. This law allows lawsuits over property confiscated by the Cuban government.
ExxonMobil is seeking over $1 billion in compensation for oil and gas assets seized in 1960. The key issue is whether Cuban state-owned entities can claim sovereign immunity to block the suit.
There is also a case involving Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line. They were sued for using docks that were seized from a US company. A lower court previously hit them with judgments over $100 million, but those were thrown out on appeal. The Supreme Court will now decide if these lawsuits can move forward.
