Market recap: Retail sales flat, Paramount raises WBD bid to $30, and Coke guidance disappoints
Stocks were mostly up Tuesday. The Dow added 0.4% and the S&P 500 rose 0.1%, while the Nasdaq stayed flat. December retail sales came in flat at 0%, missing the 0.4% growth economists expected. This weak data has the market pricing in a higher chance of rate cuts by June.
Paramount increased its all-cash offer for Warner Bros. Discovery to $30 per share. They added a fee payable to shareholders if the deal isn't closed by late 2026. Netflix is also interested in WBD but is dealing with a DOJ investigation regarding monopoly concerns.
Coca-Cola dropped 2% after providing a cautious outlook for 2026, specifically citing pressure in international markets. S&P Global managed to recover slightly but is still down significantly this year after missing earnings.
Reports indicate the Trump administration plans to exempt Amazon, Google, and Microsoft from chip tariffs if TSMC commits to US investments. Bitcoin dipped below $69,000, and Gold is trading around $5,000.

those potential tariff exemptions for Amazon and Google sound like a huge win if they happen. it really shows how much influence Taiwan Semiconductor has on the whole industry.
