Market recap: Dow hits 49k following Venezuela news, Energy and Banks lead the rally
Stocks started the week higher following the US military operation in Venezuela and the capture of Maduro. The Dow broke 49,000 for the first time, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both added about 0.6%.
Energy and defense were the clear leaders. Oil majors and services companies rallied on the prospect of rebuilding Venezuela's infrastructure. Chevron rose 5%, Halliburton jumped 8%, and refiners like Valero were up nearly 10%. Defense names like Palantir also saw gains.
Tech held up well with optimism around AI demand. TSMC and Foxconn both posted gains ahead of CES this week. Bank stocks also had a strong day, with majors like Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan hitting intraday records.
Commodities moved higher on the geopolitical risk, with gold and silver seeing decent jumps. Bitcoin is back above $93k.
On the macro front, manufacturing PMI is still showing contraction. Investors are watching for the jobs report on Friday.
